Primary Care Q & A

What is primary care?

Primary care is a branch of medicine focused on your general health and well-being.

Your primary care physician serves as your home base for day-to-day health care, providing treatment for both acute and chronic problems, offering medical counseling, and ensuring you live a long, active life.

What services does primary care include?

At Optimal Men’s Center, Mr. Knight offers a variety of primary care services for current patients, including:

Physical exams

A physical exam is a routine screening used to check-in on your overall health. During a physical, the team at Optimal Men’s Center reviews your medical history and asks about your lifestyle and any unusual symptoms.

Mr. Knight then tests your vital signs, including your heart rate, respiratory rate, and blood pressure, palpates your organs, tests your reflexes, and assesses your gait and posture.

Laboratory testing

Laboratory testing analyzes samples of bodily fluids like blood, urine, or stool. The type of laboratory testing you need depends on your age and health history. Some of the most common laboratory tests include the complete blood count (CBC), lipid panels, urinalysis, and glycated hemoglobin (A1C) tests.

Vaccinations

Vaccinations are an important part of primary care used to prevent potentially life-threatening illnesses. Vaccinations teach your body’s immune system to identify and eradicate harmful invaders like bacteria or viruses. Some of the most common vaccines include the seasonal flu shot; measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR); and diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (DTaP).

Preventive screenings

As you get older, you’re more likely to experience chronic health problems like high blood pressure, diabetes, and prostate cancer. Preventive screenings like prostate exams, colonoscopies, and blood pressure monitoring can alert you to these and other issues early in their development.

The type of preventive screenings you need depends on your age, family history, and overall health.

How often should I visit my primary care provider?

If you want to keep your health in great shape, Mr. Knight recommends scheduling a primary care appointment at least once a year. This rule applies even if you feel relatively healthy.

Many chronic conditions like high cholesterol and heart disease present few symptoms in their early development. Routine checkups can catch potentially life-threatening issues early on.
